Do you cringe when you hear the word marketing? If so read on! I was
recently working with one of my clients who has moved to a new area and
is getting ready to launch a new business. She is talented and has a
great product to offer her new community. So what is the problem? She is
a little shy, very unassuming and can’t stand the thought of marketing!
She states it “makes her skin crawl to think of selling people her
product.” How many of us can completely relate to this feeling? I know I
can, and I have had to work really hard to learn how to reframe this.
All it takes is a small mental adjustment around the way you have come
to think about the idea of “selling” yourself, your product or your
business.
One of the most important things we can do in this process is to
first identify why the idea of marketing makes us cringe? Begin by
making a quick list of 5-10 things you feel inside when you think of
marketing. Go on, don’t be shy, let it all out, it’s just us gals here.
Now make another list of 5 things that make you cringe when OTHER people
sell you something. What comes up for you? Do you feel put out? Do you
want them to just go away and leave you alone? Do you throw every junk
mail offer in the trash without even reading it? How many telemarketers
do you think you have hung up on during your lifetime?
So what does this tell us? A lot! Research companies have spent
hundreds of thousands of dollars to understand the consumer mindset.
Studies are done on color choices, times of day, days of the week, all
based on how, when and what people are most likely to purchase. All day
long we are blasted with images of products we supposedly can’t live
without. Newspapers, magazines, SPAM, television. Are you exhausted yet?
I am, so let’s break the mold and find a new way. It’s easy and can
actually be dare I say fun. It is called ”Organic Marketing.”
Organic Marketing is putting yourself out there so your audience
“learns” from you, but does not feel “sold” by you. Organic Marketing
can do in 2 hours what hundreds of dollars in direct mail cannot. It
instantly establishes you as credible and as an authority in your arena
of business. Another client discussion this month revealed that a one
day trunk show where this artist demonstrated and displayed her work,
produced a better result than all her postage stamps combined. Why?
Because she was there to discuss her product, demonstrate how it was
created and help her potential clients understand the value of her
beautiful line of jewelry. Organic Marketing goes with the grain and not
against it, for both you and the client.
